"Thanks very much," was the acknowledgment made to the Bench of Justices (Messrs V. T. Fail and «L H. Swan) at the Taupo Police Court, by two prisoners convicted of leading an idle existence, on receiving a sentence of two months imprisonment of liard labour. Was thus irony ,or gratitude at escaping a worse fate? ★ Scoutmaster Harding has been working very hard collecting the materials for the Taupo Scout Hall. The use of this will be available to the Guides as well as the Scouts. ★ The Totalisator Agency in Taupo has closed down owing to the dlf-fi-rulty of staffing. Punters who were anxious to back their fancies on Saturday last had to suffer disappointment. ★ The recital to Jbe given by the Itupo Girl Guides in aid cf the Wai Memorial Hall fund is at present under rehearsal, and good progress is being made under Captain Peart and her officers. Brown Owl, July Thompson holds a Brownie me^ting every Saturday at 11 a.m. These children will be included in the rerital. . ★ The opening on Monday next of Mr W. L. Haines new modern store at Waipahihi is advertised elsewhere in this issue. Mr Haines' new building is just across the road from the present site at the Napier Road corner. It is spacious, comprising about 1,550 square feet of floor space ,and all the fittings are designed to give customers the opportunity to see the goods in stock at a glance. Modern neon lighting has been mstalled, not only in the ceiling, but also under the pelments above the display stands so that everything on view can be seen to full advantage. The grocery department is clearly marked with the classification of various goods, and facilities are available for items on all shelves to be priced by means of plastic tabs on the front edge of the shelves. This new store will be a valuable addition to the facilities of the Taupo district, particularly during the busy Christwas period.
★ Launch owners will be pleased to know that stocks are available of the reliable Austin ^Skipper' /Marino Engine, a high speed petrol engine which leads the market for small craft. ^kipper' engines are available in 30, 60 and 100 horse power models, each available either in direct drive units or on a two to one ratio reduction, they have a very high performance, are extremely smooth running and *are designed for easy servicing and maintenance, which is a most impertant factor in the confined space of small launches. All accessories are mounted high, and are easy to freach ; the overhead valve lay-out simplifies decarbonising, valve grindmg and tappet adjustment; renewable oil filters keep the oil clean and thus prolong the life of the bearings jand journals, whilst the closed circuit fresh water cooling system keeps the engine cooling passages free from the formation of choking chemical deposits. Add these advantages to the overall quality of an Austin power unit, and you ha^e the ^Skipper' Marine engine — a watch word in dependability.
