GARDEN FETE IN GOOD CAUSE
Atomic Warfare; Wars hot and Wars cold! One turns with a keen sense of relief and optimism to read of achievement on a different type of foattle front — that of war in the ageold disease of leprosy. For in iio sphere of human suffering has Medical Science scored greater triumph than in the grim struggle on behalf of the outcast Leper. For a number of years it has been recognised that the disease responded in measure to administration of the various sulphuries. But a considerable period of trial and error had to elapse before definjte cure could be assured. Now, the drug can be administered safely, easily, cheaply and effectively. The destitute lepers of India, Burma, Korea, Africa, (lepers are of necessity destitute) are desperately in need of treatment, but a limiting factor still remains — that of inadequate accommodation, and increasingly high food costs. In its effort to reaeh and make available to all Lepeds the in- - estimable benefits of modern treatment, the Mission to Lepers in New Zealand and interdenonienational organisation — ds this year making a special appeal to augment its last years income by at least 25%. That the good folk of Taupo may have opportunity to aid in furtherance of this most worthy appeal, a Lawn Fete, as advertised, has been arranged, the enthusiastic co-opera-tion and support of residents and visitors alike is invited to assemble at the home of Mr and Mrs Osborne, Gascoigne Street, 011 Monday, October 23rd., at 2 p.m. * * * PERSONAL ITEMS Colonel G. Paintom, Medical Officer attached to the Coldstream Guards, is visiting his brother Mr D. Paintom of Pokino Road, Taupo. * * * Mr and Mrs C. R. Waddell, of Auckland^ have been staying with their daughter, Mrs Garth Patchett, of "Porlree," Rawhiti Street. * * * As a token of good wishes and regard a small presentation was made to Mrs Marie Buckleigh, iprior to iher departure for overseas, by members of the Presbyterian Y'omen's Friendly Club, of which she was a foundation member. Responding, Mrs Buckleigh extended her best wishes for the continued welfare of the club and the success of its activities.
