THE SPA ROAD
TAR-SEALING URGENTLY DEMANDED A petition is being circulated for signature representing an urgent demand of ratepayers and residents of Taupo for an immediate improvement of the Spa Road on the following grounds: — 1. — There is neither water supply nor bus service in Taupo. Many residents have no bathing facilities and must use the Spa Road to reach the A.C. Baths — many on foot, or on bicycles. Practically all residents of Taupo North of the Hospital must traverse the Spa Road to do their shopping in the township — mostly on foot, and many women take babies in prams or young children with them. . These people are subjected to a constant cloud of pumice dust, and are in danger of being struck by passing vehicles owing to poor visibility. 2. — The Town Roard has directed that Logging Trucks must use the Spa Road. Experience has shown that these heavy vehicles can cut up a pumice road within a matter of hours after grading — *especially if there is rain. The Spa Road is always in a shocking state owing' to Jho density of traflic,, there being no alternative route to timber mills, Golf Links, A. C -.I&atjks, Sulphur Workings and Spa Hotel. Heavy trucks passing over corrugations shake houses even 100 yards from the roadway, to tbe*idi^trCss and annoyance of residents. 3* From a health point of view, it is almost criminal to subject patients at the Maternity Home to the clouds of dust resulting from the ever increasing traflic.
