TAUPO GIRL GUIDES
Ceremonial and Social On Tuesday evening, September S0r a very pleasant function took place at Ricklt's Hall, when new recruits for the Taupo Girl Guides were enrolled? and 2nd class badges won by some of the girls during the past few months were presented. Among the visitors were the , Rev.. C. G. G. Sait, of St. Andrew's, ancl the Rev. Father De Bree, of St. Fatrick's, Taupo. In the absence of the president? Mr W. J. Story, the chairman, Mr C. Thomas, opened the proceedings, ancf. introduced the Brown Owl, Miss Judy Thompson, Scoutmaster Harding, As-sistant-Scoutmaster, Mr Rex Beale? and Trcoper Leader, Barry Thomas. Mr Thomas then presented on behalf of the local Assoclation a heautiful challenge shield to be competed for, on points, by the patrols, the i Captain being snxious that team work should be encouraged. The Company^ he said, had made amazing progress? and the Girl Guide movement was now an established fact in Taupo. The Captain, Mrs Peait, then took charge, and at the sound of the whistle No. 1 Marching Team under Leader Karen Reid and Marker , Shona Torepe, were put througb j their paces, and despite the cramped j space brought applause from the j spectators, including' the Headmaster I of the Taupo District Hlgh School9 j Mr Osborne. No. 2 Team then went thrcugh their movements under Leaded Jennifer Pitiroi and Marker Roseanne Redwood. The colours were ceremonially presented, and then followed the enrolment of the lecruits. Patrol Leaders | Shona Torepe, Glllian Woodv7ard, and Joy Kennedy were congratulated by the Captain on winning their stripes and 2nd class badges. Roseanne Redwood, Maadi Hough and. Karen Reid were also presented with the 2nd class badges they had won,. The "Campfire Horseshoe" then gav© a short programme which was much appreciated, ten of the Guides read the Guide Law, Leader Shona Torepe read the Guide Prayer, and "Taps" was then sung by the whole company. The Benedictlon was then pronounced by the Rev. C. G. G. Salt, of S't. Andrew's Anglican Church. During the evening Captain Peart thanked the parents of the girls for their co-operation, and her two lieutenants, who were a tower of strength, the local assoclation for their help and support, and the Girl Guides themselves, who had worked so hard to obtain efficiency. She added her regrets at the absence of their patron, Colonel J. D. Swan, who was indisposed and hoped that he would have a speedy recovery. Mr Osborne then showed a series of dental films from the Health Department, showing the care and preservation of teeth from infancy to old age. The pictures were operated by Mr E. Pearse, assisted by J. Woodward. Supper was then dispensed, the Girl Guides attendlng to over 100 people cheerfully and efficiently. It was a very enjoyable ceremonial and social evening.
