TAUPO'S TELEPHONE SYSTEM

Progress Of Installation Last mont.h two new switchboards were installed at the Taupo Post Office. These will provide up to 200 lines for new Hubscribers some oi which may be used as party lines with several subscribers on each. A large number of these new lines have already been connected, but there is still a waiting list of 50, and it is anticipated that all these will be accommodated by the end of the year. The new telephone book will be issued shortly as soon as the Mount Maunganui exchange, which is to be listed in the same book, comes into operation. Engineers recently commenced installing modem telegraphic equipment at the Post Office. This will be in part operation at the beginning of October. Operators will then be able to dispense with the old type of Morse key and will use the modern Creed teleprinter, which, with a simple typewriter keyboard, will transmit the message to Auckland for yetransmission to the required office. In transmission the message is automatically recorded on a tape machine whenceTt can be forwarded direct to the addressee without further typing. Taupo obtains priority over some larger officcs in the installation of this modem equipment owing to the large number of telegrams handled at the local Post Office.
