C.A.S. THEATRE
"CAPTAIN CARVALLO" Interest is rising in the' coming visit to Taupo of the C. A. iS. Theatre with the highly amusing new comedy, "Captain Carvallo", to be given in the RickitHs Hall on Saturday, August 30. "Captain Carvallo" is an extraordinary mixture of Shavian wit aua rollicking fun with a crazy theme set in one of those fantastic anid-Furo-pean countries in the lasi month of a long wai'. The romantic hero seems to have a wife in every billet and goes into battle with a geranium in a pot. Dur ing an involved civil conflict he xalls in love with the alluring wife of a lay preacher in whose house he is quartered. The lady is, potentially at least, by no means as innocent as one might have hoped. Her ridiculous, dissenting husband happens to be away; he has been roped in as a member of the under-ground movement together with his friend Professor Winke, who does his bit of unloved patriotic service rn orden to guarantee his future career. Thef fmd it neeessary to exchange identi - ties and tne Professor returnsf. obliged for a time to play the husband to the missionary's wife* By this time the enemy has ariived in the village and the irresistable Carvallo enters on the seene. There ensues an indescribable melee of mistaken identities and illicit lovemaking. Mr Cannan misses no opportunity of commenting on ali cispects of modern life, war, marriage and religious hypocrisy being obvious good targets. Here is lighthearted entertainment that should have a very wide appeal among the Community Arts Service?s many patrons; if the play% overseas success is any guide.
