Planting At Taupo District High School

The teaching staff and children of the Taupo District High School honoured Arbor Day last Friday by planting trees under the supervisioia of Mr M. Weekes, State Forest Ran% er, at 60-Bar 8, Iwitahi. In ihe course of a talk to the children, Mf Weekes told how the movement for community tree planting originated in the State of Nebraska, U.S.A., in 1874, spread to adjoining states and into Canada, and laterly throughout the Commonwealth. It came to New Zealand in 1908. The trees. and shrubs supplied by the State Forest Service, were received with appropriate acknowledgements, and Mr Weekes was thanked for his interesting address. Planting was then carried out as follows: — Leonie Manning, senior prefect, a totara. Bob Clark, senior prefect, a white flowering shrub. Margaret Pijiroi, prefect, a spirea^ Bill Winera, prefect, a spirea. Rachel Yates, the youngest cMlci in the school, planted a laburnum. Two members of the staff, Messrs R. C. Davis and C. J. Coffey, who are about to leave on transfer to other appointments, planted veronicas. Miss K. O. Lewis, on behalf of the School Committee, also planted a veronica.
