NEW ZEALAND CHEMIST TO STUDY
THE NEW DRUG CORTISONE To work under one of America's leading scientists on a cardiac stimulant chemically related to the new drug cortisone, a New Zealand chemist has recently left for De- j troit. Mr C. W. Brandt, M.Sc., A.N.Z.I.C. | semor chemist of the Organic Sec- ! tion of the Dominion Laboratory, | Department of Scientific and In- ! dustrial Research, has been granted a year's leave of absence to take up a post-graduate fellowship to work ■ under Dr Carl Djerassi at Wayne 'j University, Detroit, U.iS.A. Dr Djerassi has been one of the foremost American scientists in the field of determining the structure of cortisone, and for developing a synthesis for it. 'Cortisone is a new drug for medical treatment, some remarkable results belng ootained from it in the treatment. of arthritis. 'Mr Brandt is to carry out studies and research on steroids related to cortisone — that is, the class of compound of particular chemical structure of plant and animal origin that are related to the new drug.
