SHAGGY GOAT STORY

The Gum Cistus, also ealled Rock Rose, has leaves stieky with a sweet smelling gum, formerly greatly prized for perfume and medicine* It grows wild freely in Crete. The story is that the Cretans used to let their billy goats browse among the plants till their beards were well and truly gummy, then cut off the beards and boil out the gum. Presumabiy the billy goats were then able to grow fresh beards and do another round of eollecting!
