A TASK FOR CITIZENS

As announced elsewhere in this issue of the Times, the- subscription list for the War Memorial Hall and R.S.A. Club Rooms has opened with donations totalling £15 10s. As the amount required runs into thousands, it is obvious that there is a long way to go and much to be^dcne. That does not necessarily mean that the task will take a long time. It depends entirely on the energy, drive and resourcefulness that can be infused into the eixort whether the time will be long or short. A strong and representative committee, and inspiring leadership are the first requirements of the case. These requirements have still to be met. There are indications that public opinion and discussions are moving in that direction. This, so far as it goes, is at least encouraging. It may take a Iittle time to raise the temperature of the public zeal to the high mark registered during previous fund-raising campaigns. The organisers of the campaign will do well to realise that it is sometimes very difficult to reanimate public enthusiasm that has spent itself upon a previous objective. A new approach, new techniques, new money-raising schemes will be required to step up the pace of the undertaking. These are problems to be faced with confidence that they can besolved, and determination to solve them. The task is a challenge to the citizens of the Taupo Country as a whole. We are a rapidly growing community. The evidence of progress is to be seen in all directions. In strong evidence also is the growth of a healthy and progressive community spirit, increasingly conscious that the prestige of a town is reflected in the style and dignity of its public amenities. The War Memorial Hall and R.S.A. Club Rooms should therefore be worthy of Taupo, and of the remembrance which its presence should serve to keep alive and perpetuate. With this idea prominently in mind it might well be matched with the invigorating fervour of a crusade.
