AMERICAN SUBMARINE'S ANNIVERSARY
The submarine, that quick-strik-ing-hunter of the ocean depths, was recently saluted by the United States Navy on the craft's fifty-sec-ond annivers^iry as part of the fleet. The Navy?s plans for submarine expansion and improvement include the construction of six different types, all designed for greater underwater speed and endurance. Among the subsurface craft recently completed are three anti-sub-marine vessels built specifically for seeking out and destroying enemy submarines. The U.SiS. K-l, for example, is 190 feet long. 'Carrying a variety of secret new electronic retection equipment, the K-l is expected to replace anti-sfubmarine aircraft as the chief weapon of attack on enemy submarine fleets. Two fast-attack submarines have also been completed recently and four others are under construction. This class displaces approximately 1,500 tons, about the same as the World War II types, but is shorter and more streamlined for greater speed. They have a top speed of 17 knots. Also authorised for construction is the U.S.S. Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine. It is expected to have a record speed of 35 knots.
