TAUPO TOWN BOARD
Monthly Meeting At the monthly meeting of the Taupo Town Board there were present: The chaiiman, Mr J. E. Story; Miss K. 0. Lewis, and Messrs J. D. Swan, W. T. Irvine, W. G. Morris, K. E. Young, and C. J. Vedder. Taupo Cemetery A leter from the Taupo Cemetery complained of damage done by horses breaking into the grounds, and stressed the need for repairs to posts, painting the cemetery gates, supplying padlock and chain, and attention being given to the proposed lawn scheme for the grounds, raised in previous correspondence. It was decided to assure the committee of the board's desire to deal with the questions raised in a sympathetic and co-operative spirit and to make a visit of inspection at an early date. Children's Playground The Taupo Businessmen's Association, writing on the subject of the children's play area, expressed the opinion that the south-east corner of the Domain was the most suitable site. The board decided to receive a deputation from the association to discuss the question on a date to be fixed.
A.C. Baths Confirmation of the approval of the Minister of Internal Affairs of a grant-in-aid, of £1000, for the reconstruction of the A.C. Baths was received. The plans and specifications provide for the construction oi a new bath building containing 8 cubicles each 10ft. x 6ft. The board decided to raise a loan of £5000 by special order to meet the cost of the work, making a total of £6000 with the Government grant. War Memorial Hall After discussion the board decided that plans for the War Memorial Hall and R.S.A. Clubrooms should be redrawn in conformity with the site aow adopted. In regard to the balance of the sum estimated for the erection of the building, the various local institutions are to be invited to participate in a campaign to be launched to raise the required amount. It was considered that in the present stringent condition of the money market, a loan would be impracticable, and that an appeal to the patriotic sentiment and generosity of the public was the best and only alternative. With this end in view it is proposed that a public committee should be constituted to sponsor and supervise the campaign. Other Matters It was reported in regard to the Gallagher Block that owners had agreed to a 48ft. building line measured from the centre of the right-of-way. On the question of the tenancy of the single men's camp, Public Works, adjoining the area now under clearing and levelling for the new domain camping area, the board has agreed to a five-years' term, with the right of purchase of the buildings at the end of the period. It had originally been intended that the period of occupation would not be more than one year, or eighteen months. The expansion of the Works Department's activities in the district, however, had made it necessary for a substantial extension of time. Works Report. The Ohairman of Works, reporting for the Works Committee, stated that for the period 21st May to 17th June, 1952, the usual general maintenance work had been maintained. Owing to the recent wet weather several portions of various roads j
i scoured. It was found that this was due to old culverts being blocked either with silt or had broken. It was therefore necessary to replace sev^ eral of the old culverts but the type of timber required to do this work is scarce at the moment. Many of those requiring immediate attention have been done, and others will be completed as timber becomes available. Three new culverts have been put in at the corner of Rcberts and Titiraupenga Streets, Tucks Corner, and H.B. Motor Co.'s corner. Following last month's report, the Orchard Catiping Ground has now been cleared of all heavy logs, and disced in. readiness to put the grader on levelling as weather conditions perftiit. The grader has been fcept as- conjtluuously as possibl^ on the roads.
