THE WAR MEMORIAL HALL

As will be noted in the report of the meeting of the Taupo Town Board on Wednesday last, the various local institutions are being invited to coopeiate in setting up a committee to organise a campaign to raise funds for carrying out the project for the War Memorial Hall and R.S.A. clubrooms. It is the considered opinion of the Board that this is the only practicable means availabje of obtaining* the balance of the sum re~ quired to meet the full cost of the building. The loan market has tightened up consiclerably, as mcst people, no doubt, realise from published statements and the growing rexuctance of lending institutions to make advances at the present rates of interest.

So it comes to the point that the people of Taupo area are faced with the question of raising the money among themselves. They have already shown what can be done by a well-organised campaign. There appears to be no reason why that success should not be repeated. The prevailing sentiment at the recent public meeting held to ventilate the whole question was Ihat the original plan should be adhered to, and that the job should be tackled and finished. From letters received from certain corresponaents there would appear to be an inclination to reopen the controversy which the public meeting was supposed to settle once and for all. It may be 'recalled that an open invitation was extended to those present to air their opinions freely before any motion was allowed to be submitted. Various speakers accepted the opportunity and expressed their views. The final resolution was adopted by a large majority in a showing of hands. Let it then, by common consent, be resolved to translate that resolution into action and get on with the business of raising the balance of the money. The Times, through its columns, will co-operate as a member of the Taupo community, and publicise the activities of the campaigners.
