A PROGRESS REPORT

The organisation of the Girl Guides in Taupo was initiated at a meeting held on April 11 last, when eleven recruits were enrolled, with one 2nd. class Guide and one tenderfoot. Since then the ranks have swelled to a total of 22 representing a fair-sized company. The services j of three leaders — one captain and ! two lieutenants have been obtained. The girls have heen working hard for their tenderfoot tests, and have now advanced to the stage when they can look forward to their early enrolment. In the meantime the company has engaged in various activities. So far there has been one "hike." This, owing to the showery weather, was devoted to the, garden, stories, and new songs. The most important of all the activities are the hike lunches. On this particular occasion the girls were fortunate enough to have as a visitor from the Waikato a Brown Owl officer who gave an enlightening and interesting address on the Girl Guide Movement. Since then there have been weekly meetings with regular training and other activities. During the recent school holidays the company .had a visit from two Waikato Girl Guides. One of them was celebrating her 13th. birthday, and a party was organised in honour of the event. A jolly time was spent, and the local girls learnt much of nevy ideas from other countries. There songs and games, and a delightful afternoon tea, during which a cake with 13 candles was cut, making an enjoyable festival with musical honours to the singing of "Happy Birthday to You." The company has now settled down to real hard work, and expects to have its formal enrolment in the very near future. The girls are all very keen, and there is a strong executive association to keep the movement going forward. Its* members are Mesdames C. Thomas, J. D. Donnelly, A. Kennedy, C. Snooks, M. Tiern.ey, J. W. Peart, Miss E. Rickit; and Messrs the Rev. H. W. Johnston, S. Kilford, J. R. Osborne, A. Kennedy and C. Thomas.
