MILLING AND FARMING A meeting of the Maori owners of three Hautu No. IB blocks of standing native bush behind the Korohe Maori settlement near Turangi, took place at the Kohohe village dn Wednesday May 21st. to consider proposals to sell the millable timber on the area$ to the Te Puke Sawmills Company Limited. After lengthy discussions the proposals to sell at very satisfactory royalty rates were unanimously passed. •Conditions included in the terms of sale were that the Company must erect a sawmill near the Korohe settlement, thus providing work for some of the owners at the settlement. The mill will also supply the owners with slab firewood free. Building timber is also to be provided the owners for housing at cut rates. The Company was represented by tw? of its directors and a solicitor. The negotiations were carried out with the assistance of Messrs P. A. Grace and Mr J. A. Asher. At Waitetoko Pa on May 22nd. there was a meeting of the owners of the Maori blocks of land under the Tauranga Taupo Development (f&rm) Scheme at Te Rangi ita to nominate four suitable settlers from the owners for four farms on the area now ready for individual settlement. After lengthy discussion, four persons were nominated and named for each farm area from the local families, and they will be duly settled if they pass the grade test. provided for under the regulations of the Department of Maori Affairs. As the men have been working on the farm scheme for many years under the Department of Maori Affairs, it is expected that they will pass. They are men with large families.
