Naked Lights Near Batteries Can Cause Explosions
When storage batteries are being charged a very inflamma'ble gas is produced, and the Department of Agriculture warns that use of a naked light to inspect the level of electrolyte in the battery is likely to cause an explosion. Where a light is necessary use of an electric torch is advised. The connecting or disconnecting of batteries while the generator or charger is running can also cause sparking, which may ignibe escaping gas. The generator or charger should be stopped. Neglect of these precautions has been the cause of damage to eyesight, not only from the explosion, but also from acid blown from the battery.
