A "Bouncing" Bus for Birmingham
Birmingham has just put into serviee the first of its new "bouncing" buses, which are expected to save ratepayers thousands of pounds. "BouncingP does not refer to the riding qualities of the bus but to the rear offside corner, which normally suffers frequently from small dents. Now the curved steel panel has been replaced by one of moulded rubber. Accidental bumps now have no more effeet than that of a bat on a rubber ball — dents flatten themselves out immediately the cause is removed. The idea was evolved by the Birmingham Transport Department, the Dunlop Rubber Company and the Metropolitan-Cammell Carriage and Wagon Company. "It will save thousands of pounds in minor repairte" said a Birmingham official. "A slight dent in the corner panel means that the panel has to be taken out and replaced. It all means time, labour and money." The Corporation is also experimenting with rubber mudguards.
