SILK SUITS FASHIONABLE
FINE LACE POPULAR The silk suit promised to be one of the fashion highlights of the 1952 season. Not content with using a silk fabric (and there are more beaut^ul materials available this year than since before World War II), Loxidon counturiers often mount a fine lace over a taffeta and present a beautifully tailored suit of these compos|ite m'aterials. Lachasse is particularly successful in this and, in fact, it is the type of ensemble which he has made particularly his own. Some of them have slim skirts and fairly long fitted jackets, but other s have the new very wide skirt and short jacket which, with the addition of two stiiffened petticoats to make the skirt stand out, gives some idea of the silhouette which may be regarded as typical of 1952. The enormous popularity of these silk suits is significant, for nothing becomes the average Englishwoman so well as tailored clothes, so it may be safe to forecast that the standard of the fashions at Britain's smart Ascot race meeting this year will be extremely high. The ground-length dress- which had almost hecome a tradition at this race meeting is likely now to disappear, for the length of the new full dresses and suits is mid-calf; moreover, the styles are beautifully 'simple and the tailoring exactly what might be expected of London. The bats shown in the collections with both dresses and suits are of the same high standard. (It is usual now for a milliner to work with a dressmaker so that each ensemble is as perfect as possible). The new bats have a slight tilt forward over the forehead, so that the back of the head is exposed; and it is obvious from this and' from the way that coat-collars are built up, or even pulled up, that hair styles for 1952 will continue to be short.
