MEMORIES
Up Tokaanu way, where green slopes rise To the mountains' rim, and you think of Him — The Maker in the skies. Who'd spread his blessings o'er that land, Made green each hill, inspired good-will, And spread his bounty with lavish hand. Where deer stalkers scan with eager eyes The lofty crags, where royal stags Roar their challenge to the skies. Up where Roto-Aira wears it's crown of snow, And your breath you catch as you rapturiously watch Where beautiful Tongariro winds below. Up Tokaanu way, the folks were kind And I could forget, and never let Yesterday's memories come to hand — Of a war torn land, jungle mad Where sweat and mud, and tears and blood Were things to make men sad . . . My days sped like on phantom wings away. Care-free days — happy full day§, Leaving me. with memories that sing today. Up Tokaanu way, too soon came the day For me to depart — 'twas with a heavy heart I went my weary way — I lingered on Ruapehu's rim awhile, And watched the rays of the sun — it's day's race run Paint Taupo and Tokaanu with one last smile . . . If fate is kind I hope and pray For the day I can return again To Tokaanu — where the silvery Tongariro winds its way. — By G. L. Lepska, Ex-Unifed States Navy, who spent his furlough at Tokaanu.
