BRITISH MUSIC
YESTERDAY AND TO-DAY
The musical recital presented by Mr Hubert Milverton Jarta, tlhe New Zealand-born tenor, and Elizabeth Page (pianist) under the aus pieces of the Community Arts Society in Taupo on Saturday evening last was a successful and pleasurable event. There was an excellent atten&ance at Rickits Hall, and the programme items were received by the audience with much appreciation. Both vocal and instrumental numbers were in accord with the keynote of the recital, "British Music, vesterday and to-day." "Yesterday" music took the listeners back to the days of Purcell, Arne, Handel, and other 17th. century contemporary composers. "To-day's" was represented by Benjamin Britten, Delius, Rubbra, Ireland, Vaughan Williams, Grainger and others of the same modern era. It was not music in the "popular" sense, but in the presentation of it, with story and history, it was most interesting, educative and elevating. Mr Carta's reputation as an accomplished tenor singer who has raised his interpretative powers to a high sfandard 'ds well established. Mis/s Page is an accomplished pianoforte recitalist, and inaeed an artiste in her own on the concert platforms. The programme presented was a generous one. Those who were fortunate enough to be present were rich ly rewarded for their eourage in venturing out on a night that for its temperature was far from inyiting, and were both satisfied and grateful. Thanks are due to the Community Arts Society for enabling music lovers in Taupo to partake of such excellent fare.
