THE R.S.A. HALL
(To The Editor) Sir, — In reply to the letter from the president of the Taupo R.S.A., in your last issue re the funds raised by a Queen Carnival for an R.S.A. Club Room and. Social Hall, jmay I point out, that it was never intended or suggested during the Carnival that the funds be used to supply Taupo with a Town Hall. The original plan as drawn by the late Mr Harry Holder was for a building costing £1,900, comprising Club Rooms and a Social Hall large enough to entertain the members, women folk. The aniount aimed at in the Carnival was £2,000. Does the general public know that in accepting, or applying for a subsidy that the Government #ipulated that the R.S.vA., must have no sav in the control of the building, if the subsidy was granted, so practically speaking, the while thing would be taken completeIy out the hands of the R.S.A. and made a gift to the Town Board to provide a Town Hall. In the meantime, after 21 years the R.S.A. members have nothing. The idea of taking a vote at a "general" meeting does not carry much weight with the writer. I suggest that a Postal ballot should have been taken, in fairness to the country members, before the money was handed to the Town Board. The only tender received for the proposed Hall was sixteen thousand pounds. It is still not too late to carry out the original plan, on the site the McAulev family so kindly donated. — I am, etc.,
A. H.
