TAUPO GOLF CLUB
Sunday, March 16th., was, as far as the weather was concerned, the most unpleasant day of the year, with a very strong cold wind. But even these unpleasant conditions did not deter a large field of golfers from playing in the mixed Canadian Foursome, which is the match played on Opening Day. Despite the bad conditions, some very good scores were recorded, and the keenly contested match was won by Mrs M. Bush and her partner Mr E. Croot, of Wairakei. After the worn and weary players had revived themselves with the excellent afternoon tea provided by members, the president, Mr L. Cheal presented the prizes to Mrs Bush and Mr Croot; and the Summer Cup to Mr D. J. Falkner. Mr Cheal asked the patron, Mr L. Stephenson to officially open the season, by driving a ball from the first tee. Mr Stephenson expressed his appreciation at being asked to perform this dld golfing custom, the tradition of which he explained to members. He stated that when the patron .had driven the ball, the caddy who retrieved it was rewarded with a golden guinea. Mr Stephenson explained that he had gone to much trouble to obtain a guinea, which he held up in his hand, and suggested that the ladies should be allowed. the privilege of retrieving the ball. With much ceremony he then teed up his ball, addressed it with care, and hit it, which just after impact, disintergratedA into a dozen small pieces, much to the amazement of the onlookers-. Ladies' Club. The Ladies' Golf Club had their opening day on Thursday, March 26th., with a good attendance of members. A Stableford Bogey was played. The senior prize was won by Mr C. F. Colbeck, with a score of 32 points, and the junior by Mrs N. George, with 27 points.
