The ruins of the Officers' Mess in the Armed Constabulary Redoubt, Taupo. An A.C. post was established at Taupo in the 'seventies and the Redoubt was built by men under the command of Major J. M. Roberts (later Colonel, N.Z. Cross). In his guide book "Lake Taupo and the Volcanoes," published in 1901, Mr James Cowan describes the Redoubt as being well preserved, but makes no reference to the old building nor to the pumice built powder-magazine. The small dwelling in the Redoubt, built after Constabulary days, was used by the resident Telegraph Lines--man. Built as a defence measure during the Te Kooti campaigns, the Redoubt was one of a number, others being Forts Galatea and Clark, near Murapara, and Runanga, and on the Taupo-Napier route. There was no fighting at Taupo.
