Noon At Taupo Wharf

We'll tarry here awhile, mv friend, In the mellow autumn sun, By the green, clean Waikato — And admire yon mighty aspen, Whose leaves, one by one, Have known the fiery caresses Of autumn's hot-tipped fingers. The tree stands resplendent, Lifting into the light Its masses of golden foliage ; While the green, clean Waikato, Its stream translucent, bright, Sweeps tirelessly onwards Bearing a lightsome burden Of shed leaves and foam. The little boats ride at anchor At the margin of the river, Quietly at home. And the green, clean Waikato, Jocular in the sun, Chuckles under their prows; And gurgles past their keels; But the little boats dream and drowse, Sleepily warm in the sun. Taupo, February 20, 1952. — E. PERRY.
