LAUNCH OWNERS TAKE ACTION

— ^Saturday, February 9. At a meeting last night of the Taupo Commercial Launch Owners' Association it was decided to approach the Internal Affairs Department in an endeavour to have bathing and swimming prehibited within a certain diistance of the Wharf and Rowboat Jetty. Swimming from the Wharf has been prohibited by Harbour Regulation for some time following a Coroner's recommendation made after a drowning there. There have been a number of narrow escapes from drowning, the latest being reported in to-day's Times. In addition to the danger to bathers, launch and boat owners have had boats damaged by swimmers using them as diving platforms, and movable equipment has been interfered with and. launches left in a wet and dirty condition. Launch masters bringing their vessels in to the Wharf are often hampered by swimmers in the water, and at times swimmers dive in ahead of approaching launches in a spirit of bravado apparently unaware of the danger they run. Safe bathing places exist at the foot of Tongariro Street, and also in the neighbourhood of the One Mile Peg on the Lake front.
