NATURE NOTES
THE AUDACIOUS SPARROW "Tauhara" writes: We seem to be getting more sparrows in Taupo than any other bird life. It looks like that where we live anyway. In the nesting season they are a real nuisance. I found a nest of four sparrowlets under a coil of rope on a shelf on my back verandah. But there was more to follow. One day I oouldn't get my windmill to start for pumping water. 1 climbed up the tower, removed the cover from the crank shaft housing, and discovered that the whole of the inside was packed tight with a sparrows nest. There were fledgings there having a great time. I decided to leave them alone till they were ready to leave the nest. Then I cleared the rubbish out and started the windmill. As soon as I had got the tanks full, and braked the wheel to a stop, the sparrows started a new nest! But they didn't get very far with it this time. The trouble is that if vigilance is relaxed they sneak back with bits of hay. For sheer persistence the sparrow takes the top of the class.
