CONDITION OF TROUT
WESTERN BAY PROBLEM An interesting problem has been posed by a Taupo angler who has fished the Western Bay area for many years. He states that for some seven or eight years past it has been noted that the average condition of trout taken there in November has been markedly better than the average condition of December fish. That this statement is correct is evident from information from other anglers familiar with the fishing in this area over recent years. One explanation that is offered is that the majority of these November fish taken are maiden fish. It is
pointed out, however, that this solution is too simple. The majority of fish taken in November are obviously from size and appearance, not maiden fish but fish that have spawned in the prior spawning season. Many maiden fish of round three pounds weight and a little more are taken, but the fish whose good average November condition is referred to are not included in this category. The Research Officers of the Fish eries Branch may later be able to throw light on this matter, but at present it can only be recorded thataverage November condition of Western Bay fish is in recent years better than the December and January condition, a position that has been noted again this season.
