MARKING TROUT

ANGLERS, PLEASE HELP In printed notices to fishermen the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs is asking for their cooperation in marking trout. It is pointed out that approximately 6,000 spawning fish were marked durmg the winter of 1951 in the Whareroa, Whangamata, and the Hatchery Streams by the removal of the adi- j pose fin, the small . fleshy fin between the dorsal and the tail. The Department particularly needs help in recording the recapture of these fish, together with their weight, length, sex, and place where caught. This work has two main objects. First to find out whether fish which are known to have spawned, regain satisfactory condition during the angling season. Secondly, if anglers wil report their complete catches (whether of marked or of unmarked fish) it should be possible to m ake a reasonable estimate of the total yield of the lake under present angling pressure. Anglers are asked to assist this research work by completing the diary on the back of the printed notices and leaving it with departmental officers at the Turangi Hatchery, licence agent, or any fishing lodge.
