LIFE IN THE CHATHAMS
Sidelights on the 500 people of the Chatham Islands and their life were given by a man who should know them well — the police constable stationed on the islands. He is Constable A. S. D. Geary, and his report on the two hotels of the islands was presented to the Licensing Control Comission. Of the people he said: They are basically Maoris, but they have a sprinkling of practically every other nationality. They are practically related to one another, and very friendly. Of their drinking hahits, he said: They like bottled beer, but during the week the hotels are nearly empty. On Sa.turdays and on boat days, however, the bars are full. He had had no occasion to deal with a case of drunkenness since he arrived about 14 months ago. Of tourists trade he said: There had been only one true tourist to the islands since he had been there. The commission reserved its decision on the licensing of the islands.
