TAUPO 'S NEW YEARS' DAY SPORTS 1 The most successful New Year's I Day sports gvmkhana in many years was one of the holiday events in Taupo. An estimated 4,000 spectators and participants attended th1© aftair, with gate takings exceeding £100. ] Many entrants in the horse events and chopping contests came from out of the Taupo area. The athletic events drew many college athletes who were in Taupo on vacation. One of the highlights of the day was a. tug-of-war contest with six | teams entered. Interest of the spec- | tators was so intense that officials ! found it impossible to hold them hack | from the contestants. A Maori con- | cert also drew praise from the audience. Much of the succsss of the gymkhana was credited to the many fine prizes, furnished by the sponsoring bodv, the Taupo Gymkhana Club, I and donated by various individuals. I The usual sideshow events were available, and included a shooting gallery, throwing contests, dartthrowing competition, and merry-go-rounds. Trophies for winners of the day's contests were presented in the evening at the annual New Year's Day dance, by Mr J. Story, president of the sports club. •Following are the events and winners: — Horse Riding. iMost suitable pony for school child, Miss C. Graham. Best pony 14.2 and under (open), J. Livesey. Best local pony 14.2 and under and L. Grace Cup, J. Livesey. Best boy rider (12 years and under), L. Pitiroi. Best boy rider (15 years and under), L. Pitiroi. Best girl rider (15 years and under, open) iMiss C. Graham. iT. Pitiroi Trophy, best local hack, C. Hays. Best hack (open), C. Hays. Maiden pony hunter, 14.2 and under, R. Wickliffe. Open pony jump, 14.2 and under, R. Wickliffe. Maiden jump, T. Williams. Open jumping competition, Hindrup Trophy, won by J. Hindrup. Open champion hunter's jump for "Cross Cup" and miniature, J. Hindrup. Chopping. 12" open chop, H. R. iScaletti. 10" open chop handicap, H. R. Scaletti. 9" local handicap, K. Rameka. Ladies chop handicap, 'Miss A. McAuley. Athletics. Menrs 100 yards sprint (handicap), J. Loughlin. Men^ open 100 yards sprint (handicap), Fraser Trophy, J. Hogg. Men's 220 yardjs (^landicap), R. Harlan. Ladies 100 yards open handicap, Miss E, Boyle. Ljadtes 75 yards open, Miss E. Boyle. Married Women's race (5fl^yafds), Mrs E. Gillies. High jump (open), D. Bransgrove and R. McGee. Hop, step and jump (open), G. Te Tomo. Chain-stepping, G. Unfortunately, the scheduled jig-gar-chopping contest was cancelled because of a car accident in which j the participants were injured.
