The Taupo Returned iServices Association was inaugurated on June 22, 1934, functioning until late in 1936 when it lapsed to be resuscitated during the last War in 1943. The original membership was 20 active members. The number has now grown to approximately, 80, including 11 of the original members. In 1948 the McCauley family donated two sections of land to the association. A Queen Carnival with candidates sponsored by Maori, Gitizens, and Business Committees was held. during the Christmas festive season of 1949, when over £4,300 was raised for the building of a memorial Hall and Club-rooms. This amount has since been vested in the Taupo Town Board in order that the 'Memorial Hall should be eligible for Government subsidy. The executive since the inauguration were as follows: — 1934-35: President, Dr J. S. Armstrong; Secretary, W M. E. Martin. 1'936-lapse: President, Mr A. E. Booth; Secretary, H Keen. 1943-45: President, Mr J. McNicholas; (Secretary, M. G. Cuthbert. 1945-47 : President, (Mr W. J. Stevens; Secretary, B. J. Baumberg. 1947-51: President, Mr W. L. Fulljames; Secretary, G. Patchett. 1951-52: President, Mr G. Patchett; Secretary, J. A. Greatorex. The Taupo Patriotic Welfare Committee was set up in 1951. This j Committee is under the Bay of j Plenty Provincial Patriotic Council wh; h assists returned servllcemen j and dependents in times of hardship from Canteen and Patriotic Funds. The Committee comprises Mr W. L. Fulljames (chairman), Miss K. O. Lewis, Messrs J. E. iStory, Rev. H. W. Johnston, and G, Patchett (secretary). The late Dean Fancourt was chairman until his lamented death recently.
