TAUPO'S PROGRESS

Recent visitors to Taupo after an ahsence of a comparatively short period, have expressed amazement at the index of progress as reflected in the number of new houses erected or in process of construction. The Town Clerk (Mr Torepi), informs the "Taupo Times" that the number of building permits issued during the past year ended December 31, 1951 was 170, tbtalling in value £130,491. The construction rate would have been much higher had it not been for the shoriage of materials, timber especially. Builders are experiencing extreme difficulty in obtaining supplies for local housing. It is a puzzling problem to arise in the heart of the timber country, and it has been alleged, with what degree of which it is impossible to prove, that at least a certain amount of "black marketing" is going on.
