The new Catholic Church at Matamata is to be opened on Sunday, 12th inst., with special ceremonies.

The opinion prevails among a large section of travellers by railway that a seat, after being once occupied during a journey, remains throughout the property of the individual who first claimed it. This view of the matter leads to friction now and then, especially if an aggressive instead of a diplomatic attitude is taken up by the person who has vacated his seat and returns to find someone else in possession. We have received a letter from a visitor complaining bitterly of the “ awful stench ” arising from a pig sty near the railway line on the borough reserve. A recent visitor to Mr Tallentire’s claim, at Waiorongomai, considers he has one of the best pieces of ground in tbe distiict, the prospects of which are exceedingly encouraging.
