Colliery Disaster.
SEARCH PARTY PERISH. ONLY ONE SURVIVOR. MINERS WAITING! DEATH. 1,000 CHILDREN ORPHANED. New York, November 16. Thirteen out of fourteen of a search party at Cherry mine perished owing to Cawley, the engineer, implicitly obeying orders only to hoist the cage in response to regulation calls and signals. The signal bell rang wildly, and comrades implored / Cawley to raise the cage. Meanwhile flames overtook the parly, who were incinerated. . The survivor states when nearing /he passed 65 [miners sitting in a row along the gallery resignedly awaiting death. He tried to arouse them to attempt to escape, but they would not stir. The fresh outbreak of fire increased in violence yesterday, and the shaft was again sealed, and hopes of rescue have been abandoned. > The disaster has orphaned a thousand children.
