Big Fire at Paeroa.

McANDREW’B MILL DESTROYED

810 LOSS REPORTED.

ESTIMATED AT £7,500. Paeroa, November 2. Shortly after five o’clock this even 1 ; ing a disastrous fire occurred in Paeroa, when the sawmill of James McAndrew and Company was burnt to the ground. The building and plant were insured in the North British and Mercantile Insurance Company for about £3OOO, but the exact amount is not known.

The Secretary of the company estimates the loss at about £7,500, of which the stock is approximately valued at £5,000, and the buildings and machinery at £2,500. Some 35 or 40 men will be thrown out of employment. The origin of the fire is not known, but when discovered by the manager (Mr George McAndrew) it had a firm hold.

The Paeroa Volunteer Fire Brigade rendered valuable services in saving the houses in the vicinity of the mill.
