WAITOA DRAINAGE MATTERS
(To the Editor) Sir,—Again permit me to crave your indulgence whilst I reply to Geo Cairns whose letter appeared in the News of last Tuesday’s issue. lam pleased to see that the opposition have some one to champion their cause, and I should have thought that Mr Cairns would have been too modest to come out now that it’is too late. There is no need for him to tell us that he has no intellectual pre -eminence, for we know that already (although he tells us himself), and we nave placed him on one side to make way for practical, wise and clever men, and we expect those five to pull us out of the bole, and at once set about draining Waitoa. Mr Cairns assumes that I am ao absentee, but I am much afraid he is making a grievous mistake, for I am right amongst you; and although he is perched up on about the highest knob on Waitoa, I am going to promise him that he will, within three years, have little cause to refer to Waitoa as being a misty, marshy, and ti-tree growing land, for it will have long vanished before that period hoves round, and instead of Mr Cairns having ft nine foot canal in front of his residence, there will be a nicely formed road, and I fancy I hear him say, “Oh let it be soon.” Now Mr Editor, before concluding I would say this. The election is over, and the battle is won, it now behoves every one of us to settle down to work—the great work of draining Waitoa and let us make no mistake about it, as our future depends on it—each help the other out of the mire. I must heartily thank you Mr Editor for the high standard you have taken up in reference to this exciting contest. Thanking you once more,— I am, etc. „ Katepayeb.
