WAITOA DRAINAGE MATTERS.

(To the Editor)

Sir, —May I also claim a little of your valuable space in which to reply to ratepayer’s letter, which I [have just seen. Surely it was excessive modesty which prompted this gentleman to hide his identity under a nom de plume. Ratepayer and his friends have (he says it himself) attained intellectual freedom—they have high ideals—they have the progress and development of Waitoa at heart—and yet at this juncture they are evidently too shy to come forward, so they hide their light under a bushel and it falls to us—poor brainless and inexperienced ones—to offer to take up the burden and do our little best. Why did not ratepayer and his friends come forward and allow themselves to bp nominated. Most of us, who lay no claim to intellectual pre-eminence, would gladly have stood aside and allowed these clever gentlemen an opportunity to make the Waitoa Estate what it certainly should be—one of the briskest and most productive farming districts in the Dominion. But, perhaps, Rateyayer and his friends are amongst those who find that the mists of Waitoa are not conducive to clearness of intellect and prefer to keep as far as possible from this marshy and ti-tree covered sections. Still, no doubt, these same intellects will be at the service of those who are chosen to settle the vexed question of Waitoa drainage, and they, doubtless, will be properly grateful. Trusting, Mr Editor, that I have not trespassed too far on your kindness.—l am, etc., Geo. Cairns.
