MORRINSVILLE

(From Our Own Correapondent.)

Rain commenced to fall at an early hour on Thursday morning, and continued without a break throughout the day, all outdoor work being at a standstill. It will bring the grass on a lot, and aDy crops that are through the ground. Mr Corrigan had the misfortune to find one of his thoroughbred mares dead in his paddock on Thursday. It is only a couple of months since he lost a valuable young draught in the same paddock. No cause can be assigned for the death of tho animals.

Although the local troops of the P.M.R.’s put in good work, getting the range in order, the native owners of the land do not feel disposed to allow the volunteers the usa of it. It is to be hoped that the matter will be satisfactorily arranged. A pleasing incident occurred at “Milford House” boarding house on Thursday [evening, the boarders taking advantage of the approaching marriage of Miss Laura Ilotson, eldest daughter of the proprietress, by presenting her with a handsome silver salad bowl. Mr Chisholm, on behalf of the subscribers, made the presentation, and expressed the wish that Miss Hotson’s future happiness would be on the same standard, as the courtesy and attention she had always displayed towards them. Miss Hotson [feelingly responded, after which the bride-elect’s health was enthusiastically drunk. The Committee in charge of the Benefit Concert, to be held on Thursday evening next, have the arrangements well in hand, and a firstsclass programme will be presented, to conclude with an excellent farce entitled “ Undignified Justice,” the leading artists in which have already appeared on the Australian and New Zealand stage, so the sue* cess of the piece is assured. The booking to date is well forward. The cricketers held a useful practise on Saturday, though somewhat disappointed at the non-appearance of the visiting team. The weather of late has been very rough, although a good deal of rain fell, no damage is reported beyond a broken telephone wire, the result of a tree falling on it.
