MINING.
The mine manager of the Rising Sun Gold Mining Company, Limited, reports for the week ending 2nd October, as follows :
The contractors started work with six men on 27th September and have driven 20 feet during the week making a total of 466 feet. The ground has been hard to break and required a lot of shooting, but it is now improving and better headway should be made next week. A hand boring machine has been procured and this will speed the work consider' ably. The air pipes are expected to come to hand on Tuesday and will be put in as soon as possible. News from Waiorongomai is to the effect that in the Bendigo mine driving north has been continued on the Silver King reef, which maintains its normal width.
In the Seddon mine two men are engaged in putting in a drive to cut the Silver King reef, the face being now close up to the footwall. The country is full of small quartz veins, which makes it difficult to break. •' The tramway is still in a state of disrepair, although a little material is being brought up for the Hardy’s Mines, Ltd. We expect that the Bendigo Company will be erecting their battery at an early At Murphy’s mine an attempt will be made to unearth the reef in another part of the property. There is no doubt that a payable reef is close at hand, it is only a question of unearthing the precious metal. In the early days some very rich stone was recovered, and dividends paid, but the reef was never discovered.
