MORRINSVILLE
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
The fancy costume football match, held on the local ground on Wednesday, proved a great success. There were a good number of spectators present, and the .collection taken will be a welcome addition to the Club’s funds. * The outside worker defeated the inside worker by 6 points to 3. A meeting of the School Committee was held on Triday evening. The report of visiting committee was adopted, and it was decided to sand the various parts of the ground and effect other improvements, as soon as weather permits. The Board of Education wrote stating that the residents of Tauhei had applied for a separate school district. It was decided that the Committee visit the district to view the proposed boundaries, and to see if the present building is in a •central position, and adequate for the number of pupils attending. —Mr Trapski also wrote asking the Committee to forward the matter. The Chairman’s action in authorising supplies for the Tauhei School wa3 endorsed. Mr H. Nuttall is in charge and there are nineteen pupils attending. The teacher applied for leave to dispense with the week’s holiday this month and add it on to the Christmas holidays. Granted. The Board notified that the usual quarter’s allowance had been placed to the Committee’s credit. It was decided to draw the Board’s attention to local teacher’s residence, which is greatly in need of repainting. The passing of accounts concluded the business.
The local stock sale, held on Friday, again brought forth a good entry, and the auctioneers have decided to enlarge the yard before next sale, a large amount of stock being shipped by train. There is a large number of horses from this district going to the Cambridge sale during the coming week, Mr W. Corrigan having the largest number. Mr J. Gaddies has broken in upwards of seventy for Mr Corrigan, which were shod by Mr D. McL. Wallace’s firm during last week.
Mr Seales, as an experiment sowed an acre of wheat, which was threshed by Mr Butler on Saturday, and yielded 10 bushels. It was of splendid quality, and proves the value of land in this district under proper cultivation. Mr Jas. Taylor grew wheat successfully at Kiwitahi for a number of years on land leased from the natives. A large area adjoining is now lying idle pending settlement of title.
The Oddfellows Concert, which eventuated on the 21st, promises to be of exceptional merit, and patron can be assured of a good evening’s amusement. The older residents of the district will regret to learn that MrThos. McDonald, of Kiwitahi, is in failiug health. Mr McDonald was one of the first settlers in Kiwitahi, and has resided there ever since. and wishes are express 2d for hia speedy recovery.
' Mr F. J. Marshall is making a good recovery from bis recent accident, though it will be some time before he will have the full use of his hand.
Mr Butler had his threshing combine destroyed by fire on Saturday night or early Sunday morning. He had shifted from Mr Seales on Saturday afternoon and went as far as Mr Holder’s on his way to Motumaho, and left everything safe. |I understand that Mr Butler had leased the machine from Messrs Strange Bros, for the season. It is not known if it was insured. The weather had delayed threshing operations. Several settlers will be inconvenienced.
