Waitoa Drainage Board Affairs

ANOTHEK DEADLOCK

An adjourned meeting of the Waitoa Drainage Board took place yesterday, when there were present . —Messrs M Henry (chairman), H. Magitl, Matheson, and T. Bellamy. The meeting was held for the puipose of considering advice received from Mr P. Gilohrist, with reference to a olaim of £264 2s 6d by Messrs St. F T and Thompson, engineers, for certain works done in connection with the survey of the proposed drainage of the Waitoa. Messrs GilfiUan and Geddes, solicitors, on behalf of Messrs St. Hill and Thompson, threatened legal proceedings. The Clerk read Mr Gilchrist’s opinion as to the Board's responsibi’ity. Tfie Chairman considered it wise to make a settlement, and read a draft of what might bo the nucleus of a resolution, giving £l5O, or some such amount, in settlement of the claim.

For a while the discussion was somewhat lively, the Chairman and Mr Matheson wero in favour of a set tlement, while Messrs Mokgill and Bellamy strongly protested. Mr Makgill said the work had been done against the wish of the Board, and the ratepayers and he would be no party tp paying any money whatever to the engineers.—The Chairman said that Mr Corrigan supported tfie expenditure.—Mr Makg'H : Mr Corrigan neyer attends the meetings. Mr Makgill said the Board had no jjght tp spepd money on the County property, and fie would he no party to giving the ' moqey to pay for it.
