MORRINSVILLE
(From Our Own Correspondent.) THE hard frosts experienced during last week were very beneficial in drying up the roads.
The Town Board took advantage of the fine weather, to gravel portion of Studebolme Street near Mr Hogg’s blacksmith shop, which had got into a very bad state. It is now, however, much improved, and should answer the purpose well until the main system of gravelling is commenced when the loan money is available. A good distance of the Tahuna Road is in a bad state owing to the contractors ploughing several furrows over the major portion of their contracts and then being unable to complete, instead of completing small sections as they progressed. The local Baleyarda were filled on Friday, the occasion of the monthly sale, which is fast becoming an important distributing centre, over twenty trucks of stock being despatched by train from here on Saturday morning, by the Auctioneering Company, for various clients, as a result of Friday’s sale.
Mr McGlashau was unfortunate in losing his hack on Friday night, it died of an attack of inflammation.
The Eureka school-boys continued their unbeaten record on Saturday by defeating the Waihou School-boys, on the local ground, by 6 points to nil after a good game. Mr H. Page gave every satisfaction as referee. A feature of the game was the fielding and kicking by the boys. Little Rice, the midget full-back for Waihou, took the ball splendidly, while a Eureka threequarter, Devine, got in a kick that would have done credit to a rep., taking the ball in his own 25 he kicked and found the line within a few yards of his opponents goal line. A return match is to be played on the same ground, when a good game should result. The local creamery commenced operations on Monday but as yet the supply is small. One settler is going :n for'bome separation and is forwarding the cream to Hamilton, thereby saving a lot of milk cartage which is a considerable item when living at a distance from the creamery, and the roads in indifferent condition.
Taking advantage of the attendance at the sale on Friday, Mr Gaddes had his sires, Lupin and Laborer, on parade. The former is a handsome thoroughbred, and the latter the well-known draught. A native, T. Hotene, who is also of an enterprising turn of mind, had a useful draught on show which he is placing at the settlers’ services duringjthe coming season.
Monday’s mail brought Mr F. J. Marshall a notification that the sale of Leo Grand was completed. The balance of the purchase money, 350 guineas, has been paid into the bank. The builders are having a busy time here at present. Messrs Humphries Bros, are erecting a handsome twostorey boardinghouse in Canada street next to Canada Buildings. Mr Page is engaged on a shop for Mr Dignan, which is already leased to a firm of plumbers. Mr J. C. R. Watts’ staff has just completed a shop for Mr Manuel, and Mr Ollerinshaw is making good progress with Mr Ellis’ new buildings in Thames street.
Mr Howe and his assistants have just completed the installation of acetelyne gas in Mr J. C. R. Watts’ hardware shop, and it has proved in every way a great success and reflects great credit on local workmanship. As the number of installations inorease street lamps will not be required, as it gives such a brilliant light.
