An instance of the ferocity of the weasel when short of food is given in the Cromwell Argus. A settler’s wife was going tj feed her poultry when she noticed one of the hens rush out of the fowl house with a weasel in hot pursuit. The lady immediately picked up a stone and interfered. The weasel was not in any way daunted, and made at her, jumping on to her dress and getting on to her shoulders before she managed to knock it off. The ferocious little animal once again sprang on to her dress, and it was only on the interference of the settler himself that it commenced to beat a retreat. Then the settler’s dog had an innings, and the weasel’s career came to a Budden end.
Milking on shares would appear to be in popular favour in the Cambridge district (says the Cambridge “ Independent,”) judging by the large number of families and others who go in for dairying on this system. A local settler, who recently advertised for a family to milk on shares, received no less than 40 applications, 11 replies coming to hand in one day. In his case it might be explained the dairy herd is a particularly good one, and that, no doubt, attracted so many applications. Milking on shares in this district is carried out on the thirds principle, the persons entering into an agreement with the owner of the farm for the season receiving a third of the milk cheque and bonus, and also from the sale of calves, pigs, and general products of a dairy farm. Where milking machines are in use, a little less than thirds is given.
