“FOWLS—OR NO FOWLS.”

(To the Editor)

Sir, —In the course of my half-a-century travelling, I have met and read about some remarkably clever men, but since my residence at Te Aroba I have learned many things. I will only mention one just now. There are scores of people in Te Aroba who keep fowls, and the fowls help to keep the people, and so on ; but because one particular individual chooses to keep half a hundred or so fowls, to say nothing of ducks and turkeys penned up in a filthy yard in one of our main streets, the overwise or otherwise Sanitary -cum- Building cum—Health Officer James Salmon, writes in the following strain to the Borough Council of Te Aroha“ Fowls : Again have had complaints of the fowlyards at at the Palace Hotel. I can see nothing to abate the nuisance except not allowing fowls to be kept within the building area.” Marvellous isn’t it; however did he manage to ferret out such a clever idea. A man with such powers of overcoming difficulties must be of inestimable value to the municipality. He might just as well say that because one individual keeps a lot of mongrels which are a recognised nuisance, and a menace to the neighbourhood in which they exist, that dogs should not be allowed within the borough boundary ! I failed to notice in the report any remarks made by the Councillors on this Sanitary Inspector’s fowl remarks. Perhaps they treated it with the contempt it deserved. It will be a nice state of affairs if we were barred from beeping a few fowls. Unless be has a certificate he should not be employed. This is what he says concerning a certain trade—because it suits bim to do so. There are far too many Inspectors now-a days.—l am, etc., Ratepayer. Te Aroha, August 10th.
