Borough Electrical Plant.
At the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening, Mr A. T. Crosher, Borough electrical engineer, forwarded his monthly report, as follows “ I have to report that the electrical machinery has run satisfactorily during the month. During the gale of July 3rd one of the poles in Rewi-street was partly blown down, causing a short circuit on line and cutting off one section pf tfie town. In accordance with inStructpps frpm tpe JSlpptrjpnj Cojnmittee $ canvas has bpen ipade of tfie to>yn to see what support there would be if the electricity i supply were made available during the day. A list of consumers who have promised to support is given separately herewith together with the estimated income in each case. There is a possibility that some of those on the list would drop out and not take the gupply when available; on the other qand Jthepe will be others who will increase their cpnstyipptjqn fyeyopcf that ,estimated. some jresjidppts wi}l gi^ e no definite promise of support, but will no dopljt tijike the supply when available, f it msy ftp safely estimated thqt tfie iuww for the yeqr not bp less than £W‘ post pf running would be about £l2O per ftIISIW. % income is based upon the charge of fovQr pencp per unit, A number of business people requipipg power have promised support, provided tha|t PffWer £f°W the town water supply were not available at a cheap rate. With the extension of the drainage scheme now going on there will be a considerable increased consumption of water, and if further peiton water wheels $ re allowed to b e copn, pctcd they pfthpp fiaye to bp cut off for fcnree months pf Jbhe yeqx or else draw off the power bptyse water supply for that tftn.e. If this is allowed it will bp necessary to expend a further £4,0U0 to extend fcbp po>ypr house plant many years earlier than be the case. The water pressure at the power houso is more than double that available from the town water supply. Therefore, for the same consumption of water, the power available is double that of the town supply- Mr Brodie (manager pf tfjie Bank of Jfey SJealand) bas complained of the excessive pbarga of .electricity supply by rne'pr and wishps the supply to be cut off unless this can be (reduced. There is no doubt that the charge by meter is greatly in excess of tipafcjby ponfrast. I should recommend that the question of mptep rifles be revis d, and a more equitable system of charging bo adopted.” The overhead line has been run to Puriri-street extension and repairs made to overhead line. The following new connections h/fve been made: Mr J. Whitten, 3 fights; Mr Jackie. 5 lights ; and Wes leyan Parsonage 4 lights. The question of time worked by the electrical staff b as been discussed at various times. Since June Ist, the assistants have had time books and have recorded work done and time The nature of the work jpakes it to Jjepp regular hours; the time worked in the winter months being much longpr than in summer. The average for the whole yppr for each assistant, is about 44 to £6 hours i/av WAPlff
