BOROUGH COUNCILLORS DISCUSS MATTER.

Prior to the commencement of business at the Borough Council meeting on Monday, and while the members were waiting for their number to be completed a little informal discussion took place on the question of deep levels and the Go • verument grant

Some thought that the grant was a good one. but not as substantial as the district deserved, while others described the treatment the district had received as liberal.

The concensus of opinion, however, was that the companies would be standing in their own light if they refused the', offer, and if no gold is obtained by the time £ls 000 is expended it will be time to abandon the scheme, and spend the remainder of the grant, which it is hoped will be forthcoming, on more productive work.

It is , however, generally believed—and ,thefrt\js ample and good reason lor the belief—that with the proper exploitation of the Thames deep lovels, large areas of gold-beariug country will be unwatei ed, up, and that the gold returns from i district will run into substantial amounts. When this happens it means that Thames, as a gold producer, will be itself again.
