Thames Deep Levels.

MEETING-. OF COMPANIES. A SENSIBLE DECISION. GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY ACCEPTED. WORK TO BE PROCEEDED WITH AT ONCE. i < Auckland, July 13. The companies concerned in the Thames Deep Levels scheme have decided to accept the limited subsidy of £5,000 offered by the Government towards that undertaking, and to proceed with the work as soon as possible. A special meeting of representatives of five companies was held this afternoon. There were present: Messrs J. Dawson (Saxon G.M. Co.) in the chair, C. Hudson (Waiotahi G.M. Cm), J. Thornes (May Queen G.M. Co.), Graves Aiekin (Victoria G.M. Co.), and H. Green (Kuranui-Caledonian G.M. Co.) After fully considering the position and the question of subsidy the following resolutions were unanimously adopted:

1. “ That the offer of the Government of the subsidy of £5,000 towards the main crosscut be accepted subject to the Government’s conditions being acceptable, and that the Companies interested agree to pay their contributions of £2OOO each to the Central Committee when the same is duly constituted.” (2). “ That the Government be asked to set up a Board to carry out the proposed work, consisting of one member from each of the contributing companies, and two members representing the Government, such Board to have full legal powers to receive the various contributions to let contracts and disburse monies on account of same.”

J3)._ “ That as the cost of the work 1 in all probability exceed the ‘funds provided named (£15,000) the companies signing the agreement pledge themselves t° pay. (if found necessary) such further sums in equal proportions as would assure the proposed work being completed.” i

Further, that if the companies are called upon to pay this the Government be asked to give a £ for £ subsidy on such further sums.” The carrying of these resolution ensures the commencement of the deep levels crosscut.

It is not anticipated that there will be any objectionable provisions in the conditions attached to the subsidy, and when the draft oi these conditions have been received the companies will doubtless get to work as soon as possible.
