LOCAL AND GENERAL
The Postal Department has made the Mangaiti Post Office a money order and saviugs bank office, which will be a great advantage to the settlers in that district thus enabling them to transact any business they require without the loss of time in having to go to a larg- r office, wiich they have had to do in the past. The overhaul and reorganisation of London’s drainage and water supply is to be immediately undertaken. The work will take 15 years to complete, and a loan for the purpose of £IO,COJ,OOO is to be raised. It is the intention of the Government to throw more of the responsibility of roading the rural districts upon tie iocal bodies then has heretofore been the ease. The plans for road construction works will be the subject to the approval of the Public Works Department, and it is claimed that the change in sj stein will in a considerable saving of administrative expenses. As a natural accompaniment of this alteration, the staff of the Roads and Bridges Department ( now absorbed in the Public Works Department) is being substantially reduced. Certain road works will still be carried out in the Public Works Department. Under the Government’s retrenchment scheme the “ Mines Record ” and “Labor Journal” as published in their present form, will disappear. The whole of the Government publication, are to be amalgamated, and one journal, to be edited by Mr. J. Coweu, will be made to answer the purposes now served by the various pubb'eations. This arrangement however will not effect the “School Journal,” which will still be edited by the Education Department. Another version of the half-million claim against the Government is supplied by a letter received by a Wanganui resident recently, says the Chronicle, in which the writer says: -“I hear the claims against the Government is over the Chatham Island purchase, I was told on Friday that the German Government had taken it up.” If this should be the ease it may prove a more serious proposition than the alleged Webster claim appears to be. Hustling contractors gain advantage in more ways than one. It transpires that a party of Coromandel contractors finished their job well within time and got the Engineer to pass it on Friday last, A flood occurred that night and on Saturday ap enormous slip occurred, blocking the newly made road. As the work had been passed, it will devolve upon the County Council to clear the slip, at a ponsiderable cost.
In another column of this issue Mr E. Ej. Gillmap architect, Paeroa, calls for tenders for the purchase and removal of a seven-roomed house, with all conveniences, at Paeroa, As an instance of the value of pastures in this district for dairying purposes, we might state that Mr M. O’Grady, of Waihou, from his herd of 50 cows, for the season of iten months just ended, obtained a gross yield of 13,0G0lbs of butter fat, which works out a little better than 2601bs per cow. This is an average of £lO 10s per cow.

When the suggestion of iuaugurat’ng a telephone exchange was first mooted in this district, just two years ago, many were sceptical as to its adaptibility fo a town of Te Aroha’s dimensions. However, tfianka to the enorgy put into the matter by a fpvy of the leading business men, the required number qf subscribers and guarantee bore good fruit, and a fully-equipped exchange was soon established. The advantages were such that the number of subscribers have increased until at present tlr-re arc 45 subscribers op the list. The hours at which the 'pfione is available are from 9 a.m. to 5 p,m„ and from 7 to § o’clpck every evening, In towns where the subscribers number from 51 to 100 the hours of opening the exchange are from S a.m to 8 p.m. In order to avail ourselves of the longer hours another six subscribers are necessary. These will doubtless be forthcoming ere long, Anew 100-connection switchboard arrived at the Telegraph Office the other day, in order to cope with the jqcreased business.
Yesterday several young fellows apparently under the influence of overproof lemonade or some other concoction made their presence in the town known in a disagreeable manner. They appeared pypr-anxious to acquaint everybody with the fact that they bad “just como up frqm Tyaihi.” They were of the sort that, would cause uo-liccnso to ho carried iu any district.
