Thames-Paeroa Train.

PAEROA PEOPLE AGAINST ALTERATION.

A petition to the general manager of the Railway Department, asking that the request of the Thames people for the Saturday night train to leave Thames for Paeroa at half-past nine instead of six o’clock be not granted, is being largely signed in Paeroa. In connection witb this matter Mr W* Cullen, of Paeroa, telegraphed to Mr P. Grace, chairman of the Ohinomuri County Council, as follows : “ Paeroa residents indignant at Council supporting intended late train service from Thames Saturday nights. Petition largely signed protesting against it. We respectfully suggest that letter to Thames Borough Council be withheld at present.” To this Mr Grace replied : “ Resolution carried by Council ; cannot stop letter being forwarded.” Correspondents in the Paeroa Gazette strongly object to the change, and one, Jas. Geo. Harp, characterises the idea as “ one that for downright out and out impudence the like has never been heard of.” He sees ruin for the Paeroa tradesmen and asks the townspeople to “ rise as one man in signing a petition against such a scandalous proposal.”
