MORRINSVILLE TOWN BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Morrinsvllle Town Board was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening. Present :—Messrs J. M. Clifford, H. J Clifford, C. Manuel, F. J. Marshall, W. C. Pickett, and S. C. Parlour. In the absence of Mr S. S. Allen, Mr C. Manuel was voted to the chair. The Clerk apologised for the absence of Mr Allen.
Minutes of previous meeting, also of special meeting were read and confirmed. Outwa.: I correspondence approved. Inward correspondence as follows : Mr Weston, drainage contractor, wrote claiming eight shillings per day, for the time when the engineer certified to the comp’etion of the work till the final payment was made.—Decided that the letter be received as there was no undue delay in completing the payment. The Clerk of the Piako County Council wrote stat'ng that the Board were granted the lease of the buildings and section cn the terms {as agreed.—Received. Foreman to make tbe necessary repa : r3 and to fence around bir'lding under the supervision of Messrs J. M. Cliffox-d and F J. Marsha'!. Tbe Clerk of the Huntly Road Board wrote requesting the Board’s assistance in getting the charge fixed by law at £1 per dwelling per annum for sanitary service raised to £1 6s. He stated they had approached Mr Grecnslade to bring in a Bill to that effect, as ruder the present conditions they were working at a loss in some instances. - Decided that Clerk reply stating the Board is in favour of the m’r'muns charge being £1 6s.
Mr S. S. ?"en wrote as'ing permission to erect a hitching post ou the e ’pe of the footpath in front of his office in Canada-street.—Granted. To be erected to Foreman’s satisfaction.
The Tx-easury notified that the sum of £285 ss, portion of drainage grant had been paid into the Board’s account with the Bank of New Zealand, Hair'lton. The Clerk of the L'censing Com mil tie forwarded certificate for the issue of a Publican’s License for the fee of £25The Clerk stated the license bad been issued aud the fee paid. Tbe foreman reported on works co nplated, and asked fer in tiuctions le g. , ave"ing.—Decided that only patubing be done, and sand be placed ( n the footpaths were required when the weather is favourable. Air Johnton’s ofc'e - of 3s per yard for carting sand was accepted. Mr Manuel proposed and Mr Parlourseconded that the horso be offered for sale, ihe dray and harness being retained and it was left with tbe Chairman and Clerk to deil.with. Mr Johnson offered to fi l ! in the drain in Thames-street, in front ot tbe AngDcan Church and Messrs Grant and Warren’s propertios, a distance of eight chains, and form a footpath similar tr previous contract, for £27 10s. Board to supply pipes for bottom of drain.—Decided that the offer be accepted —Messrs Pickett and Parlour were appointed to meet contractor and arrange where sp >i! is to be obtained with a view to giving proper access to Messrs Brooks annd Spargo’s properties, where at present a high cutting exists.
Decided Ithit the p-'pes in front of Board’s office, which will not be of any use there, be taken up and put in drain in Studholme-street, opposite the hotel, which wi’l widen the footpath and remove a dangerous spot. Decided that the By-law re Hawkers’ Licenses be enforced. Decided that Clerk Wiite to the Minister of Railways requesting him to have the Railway Station connected by telephone, as a large number of settlers subscribed on the understanding that the ra'lway would be connect i. Decided that the Telephone Department be again written to re the charge of Is 6d for a connection v. h Auckland, it being only li miles over the hundred, for which 1A m :i es 6d is charged, and rsquest that only the hundred miles be charged for. Dr eided that the Ra'lway Department be requested to remove the piles at present obstructing tfce middle of the road, in Studholme-street. The Clerk read the est % ua f :s for the ensuing year which were as follows : Expenditure: Office expmses, Clerk’s sclary, etc., £SO ; Hospital rat ■, share of County Loan, £2O ; Engineer, £2O; Roads, streets, and footpaths, £405. Total, £495. Receipts Money in hand, £26 , Outstanding rates, £26 ; Crossing and culverts, etc.. £8 ; Government subsidy, £4O ; Hotel License, £25 ; Various. £6 ; Rat j at 2Ad in the £, £364. Total. £495. Mr Parlour in the absence of the Che'~man, end in accordance with his notice of I motion, moved that a general ra J : of 2.1 cl i in the £ on the roimproved value "of ■property within the town district be . at: ack, payable on the 29th J-ily, Mr J, i C’ff’ord seconded and it was carried.
The motion, notice of which was «,iven at the previous meeting, that the Clerk’s teV.-y be increased fron £2O to £25 per annum was cairied. The Clerk was instruct :d to obtain the necessary material for making a locker, and for repairing the blinds. The following accounts -were passed for payment : —Newman, wages, £lO 4s ; Benze, wages, 16s; Johanson, rolling footpath, Ipa ; Marshall, chaff, £5 0s 6d ; Gum.ner, ma l rial, £3 9s Od ; Johanson, for filling in drain, £l9 18s,; also progress payment on gravelling contract. The engineers account of £2O for fixing the levels, and £27 17s for storm water scheme, was left with the Chairman. The meeting then terminated.
